Recording of the first programme broadcast in the new premises for Te Upoko o te Ika radio station in the Stewart Dawson building, corner of Willis Street and Lambton Quay, Wellington.
Tape one (OHT10-0634) features a dawn karanga (which begins at 3 minutes in to the recording) and Christian prayers (karakia) by Huirangi Waikerepuru and Henare Kingi, followed by himene (hymns). The opening discussion with announcers Te Hepara Brian Hemmingsen (Ngāi Tūhoe) and Henare Kingi (Ngā Puhi) looks at the use of the kupu (word) 'Pakeha'. Following this: Sid Hirini Mead welcomes listeners to the radio station; waiata; and a welcome from Henare Kingi.
Tape two (OHT10-0635) features Piripi Walker and Huirangi Waikerepuru, Horiana Hakaraia (Ngāti Porou), and Maaka Jones (Te Whānau a Apanui, Kāi Tahu). Piripi Walker acknowledges organisations who have provided funding and support for the station, such as the Radio New Zealand engineers (in english). They all speak about the kaupapa of the station to promote the use of te reo Māori. Include waiata 'Maranga mai' by Aotearoa.
Tape three (OHT10-0630) features a talkback session discussing the kaupapa of te reo Māori. Hosted by Huirangi Waikerepuru (Ngāti Ruanui), Henare Kingi (Ngā Puhi) and Kura Anderson (Ngāti Porou). Features a call from Mere from Wainuiomata, and Ngahiwi Apanui from Ruatoria. Discussion refers to Cyclone Bola, and talks about the iwi radio station of Ngāti Porou.
The station first broadcast for a short time period in 1987. It restarted operation in 1988.
