Jones, Maka, 1927-1997

Daughter of Paul Delamere, the Poutikanga of the Ringatu Church. Tohunga, and Ringatu minister. In May 1986 she blessed the Karanga Karanga exhibition of art by Māori women artists in the Wellington City Art Gallery. Featured in Judith Binney's book 'Nga Morehu'.

Description: Colour and black and white prints of images taken at the launch of the book "Nga Morehu: The survivors" by Binney and Gillian Chaplin, by Gil Hanly on the 27th of November 1986 at Waipapa Marae, University of Auckland. The images show people at an outdoor gathering where they move on to the marae grounds, are seated, listen to speeches and talk together afterwards. Reverend Tawhao Tioke is one of the speakers. Some show Binney and Gillian Chaplin as they stand around a table with many copies of "Nga Morehu" which are later given out. Many show people holding the book. Particularly featured are five of the women who were interviewed for the book: Hei Ariki Algie, Heni Brown, Maaka Jones, Heni Sunderland and Miria Rua. Others include Ranginui Walker, the daughters of Huti Onekawa - Noti and Moe, and the daughters of Reremoana Koopu - Iri Koopu and Toma Walker. Description: Recording of the first programme broadcast in the new premises for Te Upoko o te Ika radio station in the Stewart Dawson building, corner of Willis Street and Lambton Quay, Wellington. Tape one (OHT10-0634) features a dawn karanga (which begins at 3 minutes in to the recording) and Christian prayers (karakia) by Huirangi Waikerepuru and Henare Kingi, followed by himene (hymns). The opening discussion with announcers Te Hepara Brian Hemmingsen (Ngāi Tūhoe) and Henare Kingi (Ngā Puhi) looks at the use of the kupu (word) 'Pakeha'. Following this: Sid Hirini Mead welcomes listeners to the radio station; waiata; and a welcome from Henare Kingi. Tape two (OHT10-0635) features Piripi Walker and Huirangi Waikerepuru, Horiana Hakaraia (Ngāti Porou), and Maaka Jones (Te Whānau a Apanui, Kāi Tahu). Piripi Walker acknowledges organisations who have provided funding and support for the station, such as the Radio New Zealand engineers (in english). They all speak about the kaupapa of the station to promote the use of te reo Māori. Include waiata 'Maranga mai' by Aotearoa. Tape three (OHT10-0630) features a talkback session discussing the kaupapa of te reo Māori. Hosted by Huirangi Waikerepuru (Ngāti Ruanui), Henare Kingi (Ngā Puhi) and Kura Anderson (Ngāti Porou).
