Terry Dunleavy was born in Te Awamutu in 1928. Describes his family's moves to Hamilton and Auckland. Talks about his father working in hotels and running the Dominion Breweries shop. Describes attending Sacred Heart College in Auckland, a welding apprenticeship at Ellis Hardy Symington, a cadetship at State Advances Corporation and joining the Air Force before getting a job at the North Wairarapa Herald in Pahiatua. Talks about the editor Sandy Powell, local stories covered and becoming editor and manager himself. Mentions Keith Holyoake. Describes meeting and marrying kindergarten teacher Margaret Eising, his interest in sports journalism and getting a job with the `New Zealand Sportsman'.
