Description: Interview with Harry (Henry) Hubbert, born in Auckland in 1919. Refers to growing up in Waihopo and Auckland and his education. Mentions getting a job as a messenger with a printing company in 1935 after applying for 31 other jobs. Talks about working in the printing area after five months, and being apprenticed after a year. Describes his training including classes at Seddon Technical College. Refers to being turned down by the army for poor eyesight in 1941 and finishing his apprenticeship in 1942. Discusses the history of Dawsons Printing Company where he worked for over 44 years, its various premises in Auckland city and the types of printing work they carried out. Comments on the process of colour printing, suffering from exposure to bronze dust, doing both letterpress and offset printing, and the types of inks used. Outlines the printing process from receiving the "chase" of type from the compositor to printing final copies. Describes the process of collation and binding of magazines. Refers to working on a Bremner machine which printed in colour on hand-fed sheets early in his career. Mentions working with flatbed machines, which were slower then the later rotary printers. Refers to high-speed web printing used for newspapers, photo-engraving for offset printing which is no longer used, and the vast changes in printing technology in recent decades.
