Description

Frank van Hattum was born in New Plymouth in 1958. Gives details of his family's emigration in the 1950s. Recalls their Dutch friends, English being spoken at home and his father's conscious decision to become a New Zealander with retention of some Dutch traditions. Mentions his father had been an accountant but worked in a cheese factory and then became an insurance salesman. Recalls his father setting up the `Central Soccer Club'. Talks about schooling, an emphasis on sport and his ambitions as a soccer player. Describes being a Taranaki representative from the age of nine and first memories of being a New Zealand representative in 1980. Talks about replacing Sandy Davey in the team selected for the World Cup squad. Describes touring Fiji, Indonesea and Taiwan and the qualifier games for the World Cup. Discusses preparation for the Cup and going to Spain with the team. Talks about being a goalie and his performance in the World Cup. Comments on the Dutch response to his playing and visiting relatives in Holland after the Cup. Describes meeting and marrying Lynn Wallace and talks about their sons. Talks about playing for Wellington United and being manager and goal keeping coach for the New Zealand soccer team. Comments on wanting to learn the Dutch language and some regret at the loss of his Dutch culture.
