Description: Frank van Hattum was born in New Plymouth in 1958. Gives details of his family's emigration in the 1950s. Recalls their Dutch friends, English being spoken at home and his father's conscious decision to become a New Zealander with retention of some Dutch traditions. Mentions his father had been an accountant but worked in a cheese factory and then became an insurance salesman. Recalls his father setting up the `Central Soccer Club'. Talks about schooling, an emphasis on sport and his ambitions as a soccer player. Describes being a Taranaki representative from the age of nine and first memories of being a New Zealand representative in 1980.
