Description

This project marked the restoration of the Civic Theatre in Queen Street, Auckland which is important for its architecture and for the part it has played in the pleasure pursuits of generations of New Zealanders. It was built in 1929 at a time when movies accompanied by music hall entertainment were very popular. It was designed to be the largest and, with its fantasy decor, most exotic of the Queen Street cinemas. The interviews were with many of those people engaged in the behind-the-scenes working of a moviehouse and also include those involved in its conservation as a historic building.
