Major, Charles Edwin 1859-1954 : Seventy years of life in New Zealand

Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: This project marked the restoration of the Civic Theatre in Queen Street, Auckland which is important for its architecture and for the part it has played in the pleasure pursuits of generations of New Zealanders. It was built in 1929 at a time when movies accompanied by music hall entertainment were very popular. It was designed to be the largest and, with its fantasy decor, most exotic of the Queen Street cinemas. The interviews were with many of those people engaged in the behind-the-scenes working of a moviehouse and also include those involved in its conservation as a historic building. Description: Photograph of the demolition of the Tivoli Theatre shops in Molesworth Street, Wellington, showing the sign for Mrs Elizabeth Copeland's tea rooms, taken 1990 by Margaret Barker. Mrs Elizabeth Copland was already listed as a confectioner at no 33 Molesworth Street when the Crown (Artcraft, Tivoli) Theatre buiding and its shops opened over the road in 1917. No 33 may have been her place of residence as Arthur Copeland, a gardener, is also listed there in 1917. She ran her tea and supper rooms at no 32 Molesworth Street from a shop in the Crown (Artcraft, Tivoli) Theatre building from 1917 to 1921, afer which she moved her business to 128 Lambton Quay The Tivoli Theatre was damaged by fire in 1963 and most of the building was demolished. What was retained were the shops along the street. These continued in use until they were closed in preparation for the building of the High Court, and were demolished in 1990 Quantity: 1 colour original photographic print(s).

Mr Tartakover's face is a photograph glued to a cartoon figure. He is holding hands with Mickey Mouse. Description: Vearl Eteveneaux was born in 1918. Her mother's parents, Mr and Mrs Robert Russell, arrived in New Zealand in 1874 and her mother was born in Lawrence. Describes how the family moved to Dunedin where her mother married her father, Ted Harper. Describes how she was born in the middle of the 1918 flu epidemic. Recalls the family's moves to Dannevirke then Gisborne where her father bought a garage. Mentions Robert Kerridge's service car business. Describes attending Gisborne Primary School and getting two years at high school by achieving proficiency. Recalls staying with her mother, who had bad health, until she was married. Describes how her husband Miles Eteveneaux arrived in Gisborne with the Air Force. Talks about his family living in Akaroa then moving to Dipton. Mentions that Miles Eteveneaux showed films round rural halls from the back of a Dodge truck. Describes how he got a scholarship to an electrical college in Chicago where he learnt the functions of studio work. Describes how he operated picture theatres with John Angus, who was killed in the war, and showed movies to the troops in Fiji. Describes how he became an aircraft electrician. Recalls their marriage in 1944 and living in Gisborne where they operated three small country cinemas. Mentions their theatre in Manatuki. Recalls going with father to inspect mine and notes that almost every house belonged to coal miners. Mentions `Old Billy' who grubbed gorse and came in to the house for tea. Also refers to swaggers coming for meals. Other memories include: visits to Coach and Horses Hotel; World War One; Walton School; Influenza epidemic (1918); entertainment at Green Island Picture theatre and brief reference to Kirkland Hall.
