Gerald Charles Ditchfield who was born in Dunedin outlines early family life. Recalls being apprenticed as a letterpress machinist; joining Air Training Corps - trumpet band; joining printers' union; marriage and move to Whitcombe and Tombs printing works. Mentions being elected part of the `Chapel' and explains origins of `Chapel'. Recalls becoming Otago Trades Council delegate; Secretary of Dunedin Labour Representation Committee; and Secretary and Treasurer of Otago Branch of Printers Union. Mentions Alistair Abernethy also mentions death of Bob Freeman. Others mentioned include: Roy Waishing, Ken Baxter, Finton Patrick Walsh, Jim Knox, Tom Skinner, Alan MacDonald, Charles Bennett, Jim Anderton and Norman Kirk. Talks about equal pay and womens issues with reference to Connie Purdue and the Kedgley sisters. Recalls womens rights in the Printers' Union.
