Description

Tame Hohaia gives details of his whakapapa, growing up in Kiritehere, names his ancestors, parents, brothers and sisters, educational history including details of Marokopa and Kiritehere school, living through the years of the depression. Describes being a child in the area during the 1930's, living near the bush and the sea, abundance of food but lack of bread, life for farmers and bush workers in the area, fishing, hunting, breaking in wild horses, relationship with Taranaki, fishing for the Poukai. Recalls wartime memories, Te Puea's request, training as a homeguard. Notes that only one resturned serviceman from there. Recalls a great flood in about 1929-1930.

Gives historical information about Kiritehere and the Marokopa Marae including the meaning of Kiritehere, battles in the area, Te Rauparaha capturing slaves, names of mountains and sacred places, naming of original site of marae and names of the whare. Recalls many skeletons buried in the sand. Notes that Ngati te Kanawa is the Kiritehere hapu and that Hohaia was the only family in Kiritehere.
