Artist not identified.
Shows a head and shoulders frontal miniature portrait of Mary Ann Simpson, nee Hargraves (or Hargreaves). She wears a tight-fitting bonnet around her head with little hair visible, and a dark blue high-collared dress. She gazes off to the viewer's right
Inscription on the back of the portrait reads: 'Mary Ann Simpson nee Hargraves. Born 1800; died Jan 2nd 1871. The eldest daughter of Robert Hargraves Esqr. Marr[ied] Ian [i.e. Isaac] Simpson 4th Dec 1820. Residence: East Cliff House. Great-great grandmother'
It is possible that Mary Ann Simpson was a relative of the original owner, on the other side of the family tree from the Gold family. Details of Mary Ann and Isaac are sparse nad not clear

Provenance: Bought by the donor at an antiques market in Cirecester, in August 1994
