Description: Made by Kupli Brothers. Single doored wooden bookcase with internal shelves. Ornamental dowling pattern in glass doors. A double purfling runs along the upper ledge and around the exterior of the door. On claw legs. The Kupli brothers were active as cabinet-makers from 1906-1914 The name of the furniture maker is mentioned by J. C. Miniature portrait of Matilda Jane Grove

Description: Artist not identified. Head and shoulders three-quarter view of Matilda Jane Grove. Her hair and dress are Georgian style, though the portrait suggests she is in her later teenage years, and therefore drawn in the late 1830s. Mounted in a black oval frame. The portrait is accompanied by a piece of paper with information written in a modern hand: "Matilda Jane Grove | wife of Eliot [Bartholomew] George Warburton | daughter of Edward Grove of [Shenstone] Park, Staffordshire | mother of George Eliot Hartopp Warburton (went to NZ in 1866)" See also: MS-Group-0561. She wears a tight-fitting bonnet around her head with little hair visible, and a dark blue high-collared dress. She gazes off to the viewer's right Inscription on the back of the portrait reads: 'Mary Ann Simpson nee Hargraves. Born 1800; died Jan 2nd 1871. The eldest daughter of Robert Hargraves Esqr. Marr[ied] Ian [i.e. Isaac] Simpson 4th Dec 1820. Residence: East Cliff House. Great-great grandmother' It is possible that Mary Ann Simpson was a relative of the original owner, on the other side of the family tree from the Gold family.
