Description

Accompanying note from cartoonist states 'In 2014 a vigorous debate has raged in Whangarei about whether or not to proceed with a proposal to build an arts centre to honour Friedensreich Hundertwasser. It has been decided to hold a binding referendum on the issue in March 2015. As part of the campaign to encourage people to vote "Yes" to the proposal I was invited to produce a campaign image. The campaigners had noted two political cartoons I had produced earlier in 2014 attacking the decision of the Whangarei District Council not to proceed with the proposed centre. My cartoon "Yes to Hundertwasser" is an assemblage of the letters that make up the name Hundertwasser. I have arranged the letters in the form of a 'person' with arms raised exuberantly. I have used colour symbolically: the legs are brown (like a tree roots), the arms are green (like foliage), the head is yellow (sun-lit). The only solid black is the exclamation (to reinforce the 'yes' vote). I have given the image a sky-blue background to echo the Northland region blue used by its sports teams. Also, I have made the letters A,R and T bright red to honour the word "art" which I found buried within the name Hundertwasser. This is useful since the whole campaign revolves around the plan to build and arts centre. In the cartoon, I tried to honour Hundertwasser by using the letters of his name, references to nature, use of curves, use of colour, and use of the word "art". Due to the arrangement of the letters in this way, other words can be deciphered anagrammatically (but only coincidentally) eg "hund", "und", "eat", "swear" "wear", "hews". The figure stands symbolically in the light blue world of Northland. It is not a slick, razor-sharp, professional image; but rather simple, naove, personal, homemade in its feel. This cartoon image is to be used in posters and decals as part of the political campaign ahead of the referendum.'
