Description

Card from an Auckland restaurant shows an illustration by David Kennedy, of three circular tables in a restaurant. Under each table sit men in suits, purporting to be table supports but in fact all drinking alcohol surreptitiously. In the background a policeman has opened the door and is looking in to check for illicit drinking. The text reads: "It has been said that our liquor laws are out of date, but at least they give rise to one of the most charming New Zealand customs ... under-the-table drinking".

The Gourmet got its first liquor licence on 13 December 1960 (information retrieved 4 December 2014 from http://www.stuff.co.nz/sunday-star-times/entertainment/sunday/sunday-magazine-a chive-26514/52656/NZs-changing-restaurant-scene )
