Translation provided in August 2014 of the first 4 lines of the first leaf (Prayer to Virgin Mary or Song of the Virgin Mary) suggests this is a prayer book used at church for morning prayer.

Physical Description: Vellum, 168 leaves, bound;170 x 130 mm. Single column, 22 lines, ruled in blind with text beginning above top ruled line, written space 110 x 92 mm; written in red and black ink.
Provenance: Created probably in Ethiopia (date unknown).
A 20th century owner has marked the leaves in places with ballpoint pen.

Textblock sewn on four stations laced into the boards. Sections of text indicated by tufts of yellow, green, and black thread sewn into the vellum at the fore-edges., Collation: 18 gatherings. i 4 leaves, ii 10 leaves, iii 8 leaves with inserted 9th, iv-xii 10 leaves, xiii 9 leaves, xiv-xvii 10 leaves, xviii 6 leaves (first three leaves of first gathering and last leaf of last gathering blank).
