Two cartoons depict a sign on Gold Beach in Normandy. The sign bears graffitti 'I was here Brig. James Hargest 6.6.44'. Refers to discovery of a diary entry by Hargest which confirms he landed in France on D-Day with British Major General Douglas Graham. Thus being the only New Zealander recorded to have set foot on shore on D-Day. Gold Beach was the code name for the beach area between villages Arromanches-les-Bains, Le Hamel and La Riviere.
