Shows a wide track through Peel Forest, in South Canterbury. Either side of the track is a dense forest of totara and kahikatea. One tree has fallen in the foreground to the left. Two people on horseback ride the track, while another figure appears to be walking, some way ahead of the horsemen
See also Hodgkins' painting entitled 'Near Peel Forest' (ref C-165-003), which is dated 1882, suggesting this painting was done around the same time
