Description

Photograph album of photographs and postcards relating to an unidentified New Zealand family. Compiled by unidentified person, possibly Gladys. Some images are annotated with names, dates and scene descriptions. Taken by photographers Wrigglesworth and Binns, Peter Pan Studios (Wellington), and unidentified photographer(s) between circa 1912 and circa 1925.

- Images chiefly show family and friends at home and on holiday, and participating in various recreational activities, cricket, tennis, boating, swimming, and visits to the zoo, deer park and seaside. Also includes wedding scenes and adults and children with household pets and horses. Includes women in 1900s and 1920s fashions, wearing fur coats, cloche hats and carrying parasols.

- Identifiable images include: the Hydro Grand Hotel, Timaru; the gravestone of Elizabeth, wife of Robert A Lilley (died 30 Nov 1925); and New Plymouth city and Pukekura Park. Also includes the post office, water tower, the band rotunda and tea kiosk in King Edward Park in Hawera, and St Pauls Church in Normanby. Also includes the old Government Buildings and Pipitea Wharf sheds in Wellington; the HMS 'Chatham'; Auckland city and harbour; and three ladies in a airship theme peep board at the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition in Dunedin 1925-1926.

- Images of identifiable people include: Ken Impett (?), Frank Fahey, G Nairn, T Brankin in army uniform (circa World War One). Also shows Leonie Kirkman (dated May 6 1925) and British comedian Wee Georgie Wood at the Christchurch trots on 13 August 1925.

- Includes a small set of pictures taken in a Pacific or Melanesian location showing local children and adults, and an European woman. Includes a photographic calendar containing a scene of a man carrying a child, inscribed on reverse with New Year greetings from 'May' and identifying the image as 'Isaac and Joeli' .

- Also includes three sets of tourist photographic postcards featuring beaches, landmark buildings and street scenes in Wellington and in Christchurch circa 1912 to 1925, plus scenes at the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition Dunedin 1925 to 1926.

- Album contains loose prints.

Provenance: The donor works as a prop buyer for films and had purchased the album from Ethel Anne Antiques in Hawera ca 2010. The album was used for reference purposes, e.g. set dressing ideas, during the making of the film 'Predicament'.
