Photographic firm. J D Wrigglesworth was in business in Wellington 1863. In 1874 with F C Binns he opened establishments in Christchurch and Dunedin and by the turn of the century the name Wrigglesworth and Binns was the best known portrait company in the country. Some portraits annotated in pencil as; Harriet Ellen (nee Philps), Charles Parker, Bill Nimmo, Ernest Ross (aged two years, from Edie), Ethel Soper (nee Brogan), Eileen Brogan (Frank's daughter), Annie Taylor?, Emma Philps (Edward's wife), Edward Brogan, Catherine Philps, Agnes Nimmo (grandpa's sister m. Walter Carter?, Elizabeth Francis m. Henry Philps, Agnes Parker, Alex Parker, Frank, Alfred (Bob) Parker, Ida Rentoul (nee Parker), twins Lily and Flo, Elizabeth Parker (nee Hartley, wife of Alex), Phelan?, Agnes Brogan/Whittaker, Jacobsensen?. Portraits include children with spinning top, other toys and dogs, plus a man in an academic gown, mortar board and dark glasses, One portrait is inscribed on reverse 'J.V.Kyte'. John Philps and wife Catherine (nee Turner) emigrated to Wellington on board the 'Lord William Bentinck' in 1841. Back cover is loose. Blank watersilk end papers. Front cover has brass clip on right hand edge. Text block has gold gilding. First page has 'Album' text. Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Vincent Pyke arrived South Australia from England 1851. He was a staunch supporter of Miners' rights. In 1855 he was elected to the Legislative Council. In 1861 the goldfields of Otago attracted from Australia a coterie of men who had made their mark in Parliamentary life in Victoria - One of these men was Pyke. In Aug 1873 he was elected MHR for Wakatipu. He was a staunch supporter of Central Otago. He was Chairman of Vincnet County Council which was named after him.
