- Description
The prime minister, John Key, having a cup of tea with the leader of ACT, John Banks, says that he would 'get more sense outa the Mad Hatter's tea party than Winston Peters!'. John Banks, the Mad Hatter, replies 'Wow! How'd he take an insult like that?'
By November 2013, with the Maori Party and ACT in decline, the National Party was looking for more possible coalition partners. A possible 'cup of tea' agreement with a hostile Winston Peters and the New Zealand First Party was mooted. The previous such arrangement with ACT and John Banks had not gone very well.
