Description

The Prime Minister, John Key, presents the report by the Children's Commissioner on solutions to child poverty and asks his cabinet to suggest a response to the report. Their reactions are all hostile and contemptuous of the poor.

Accompanying note from cartoonist states 'A skimpy, bits-and-pieces approach to poverty has been shown to be a dismal failure throughout all of human history.'

On 28 October 2013 an expert advisory group set up by Children's Commissioner Russell Wills released its progress report on what it believed must be done to tackle child poverty. The group said progress had been made, but it had been a 'piecemeal' approach and was not adequate on its own to overcome the problem. The report, Solutions to Child Poverty in New Zealand: Evidence for Action, recommended a comprehensive, holistic and sustained response. The commissioner revealed a philanthropic trust had raised the money needed to monitor child poverty after the Government declined.
