Shows a stone bascule bridge spanning the river Lawe at Vieile-Chapelle, in northern France, during the First World War. A man loads goods onto a barge at the river's edge. On the right is a building bearing the sign 'Charbons de Marles' (coal from Marles-les-Mines, a village close to Vieille-Chapelle)
From 1914, Frederick Ellis served in France for four years as a gunner with the Duke of Wellington's West Yorkshire Regiment
