- Description
Captioned 'Child poverty in NZ', the cartoon shows the Minister of Social Development, Paula Bennett, holding a large bag of money labelled 'Pay rise' tells a hungry child 'Don't worry, we're aware of your problem and are taking a thoughtful & strategic approach to tacling this complex issue! So zip it, sweetie, I've got some serious Christmas shopping to do!'
On 9 December 2013, the Social Development Minister, Paula Bennett, claimed that the Government was making progress to reduce child poverty, despite a new report showing a quarter of the country's children were living in poverty. In December Members of Parliament were given their pay increases, with no need for a 'thoughtful & strategic approach to tackling this complex issue'.
