An obviously insane stand-up comedian, 'MMP', becomes the target of a hostile audience which he is facing at the 'To Nite Election Stand-up' when he says 'Wait! Wait! Have you heard the one about the Nats gifting ANOTHER seat to secure a parlt. ally?!'
The 'Coat tailing' provisions of the system of proportional representation had led to political parties with less than five percent of the vote gaining list seats so long as they won one electorate seat. This had led to the National Party offering only token opposition to friendly minor parties in electorates such as Epsom and Ohariu in the hope of gaining list support from them. There was much public dissatisfaction with this feature of the system. National had not only let the provisions stand after the report of the Commission to review the system which had reported earlier in the year, but was now hinting that it would work a similar deal with Colin Craig and the Conservative Party.
