- Description
Captioned 'Goodbye to the backbenchers...', the cartoon shows the Prime Minister, John Key, ordering three of the more inactive of his party's backbench MPs out of parliament. One says '..Retire!? But where else will I find a job that pays a fortune for doing nothing?' while another complains the she has yet to finish her knitting. Two rats comment on the scene; one rat asks 'Is the ship sinking?' while a snake hisses in the foreground.
Six National Party Members of Parliament had announced their retirement by 11 November 2013. This could either be construed as rejuvenation by removing 'dead wood' or as 'rats leaving the sinking ship'.
