Ricki Herbert, the All Whites coach, claims that there is no coach better than him. 'I saved football in New Zealand. I did it all at the World Cup...' Behind him an All Whites player wonders 'NOW he goes on the offensive?'
On 14 November 2013 Mexico beat the New Zealand All Whites 5-1. Ricki Herbert's contract as coach was to expire at the end of the World Cup cycle, on 19 November 2013, and following this defeat, renewal was doubtful. Herbert was criticised for fostering a defensive style of play. However he indicated that he would fight for his job, complaining that he had not been given enough credit for the unbeaten 2010 World Cup team, and that he had rescued football in New Zealand.
