In October 2013 the government was negotiating a trade deal with the United States among other countries. Despite claims that the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement could bring economic benefits, the secrecy of the negotiations sparked opposition among many including medical and education experts, economists and workers' unions who anticipated that the deal might have negative impacts on affordable medicine, food safety, the environment, intellectual property and New Zealand's sovereignty. The pressure which the major player, the United States could bring to bear was especially feared.
