The Prime Minister, John Key, and the Minister of Transport Gerry Brownlee, in a drunken state, drive a car, almost hitting children. Key thinks that lowering the drink driving limit would not be a good moves in election year. Brownlee says 'I'll drink to that!'
The Ministry of Transport's 2010 study on drink driving marshalled evidence to show that the limit should be dropped from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg. The Government set up a research project looking at drivers whose blood levels fell between these two levels. The study finished in 2013 to help inform a Cabinet decision. Any legislation would be unpopular and would be introduced in 2014, an election year....
