- Description
Under the caption 'Downstage to close' are the two masks which symbolise drama. The mask for Comedy has been replaced by that for Tragedy.
Following the decision by Creative New Zealand to not fund the Wellington Downstage Theatre for 2014, the Board of Downstage Theatre on 17 September 2013 announced that New Zealand's first professional theatre would close after fifty years. For theatre-goers, actors and drama lovers, this was indeed a tragedy.
