Description

The hand of the government finally begins to unlock the investigation into the Pike River mine disaster.

In July 2013 Pike River Coal was ordered to pay $110,000 to each of the victims' families and fined $760,000 - but in the end didn't pay the fine and only paid $5000 to each family. In Spetember 2013 the New Zealand government announced plans to re-enter the sealed-off Pike River Mine where 29 men died in a series of explosions nearly three years after the event.
