- Description
The Prime Minister, John Key, dressed as a fortune teller, peers into her crystal ball and tells her customer, the New Zealand tax payer, 'I see Rio Tinto staying at Tiwai Point for the long term - That'll be $30m ta...'
In August 2013 the government paid the majority shareholder of the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter a subsidy of $30 million in order that the smelter be kept open. Jobs and the share price for Meridian Energy, the Tiwai Point electricity supplier, may have been saved, but at a cost to the taxpayer.
