Two Members of Parliament, represented as winged pigs, wallow in the parliamentary trough and tell a taxpayer bring fresh food for them 'Promise we Won't abuse our travel perks...' A newspaper headline in foreground states 'MPs keep travel perks in house'.
On 10 August 2013 a Law Commission call to switch control of the perks to the Remuneration Authority was accepted by Prime Minister John Key in 2010 but changes to the Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Services) Bill return control of travel and accommodation perks to the Speaker. The promise of not abusing their travel and accommodation perks was widely greeted with sceptism by the public - 'pigs may fly', as the common saying had it.
