The Prime Minister of Egypt, Hazem Al Beblawi, states 'When it comes to choosing between human life and clean streets in Cairo...well, hell, its a no-brainer.'
Accompanying note from cartoonist states: 'Egypt's Prime Minister, Hazem Al Beblawi, needs to come up with something better than "Today was a difficult day." to address the deaths of hundreds on the streets of Cairo.'
On 14 August 2013, Egyptian security forces raided two camps of protesters in Cairo: one at al-Nahda Square and a larger one at Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque. The two sites had been occupied by supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from office by the military after mass street protests against him. The camps were raided after initiatives to end the six week sit-ins failed and as a result of the raids the camps were cleared out within hours. The raids were described by Human Rights Watch as the most serious incident of unlawful killings in modern Egyptian history, with some 700 people killed.
The Egyptian government attempted to downplay the massacre, declaring that it was a police action to clear the streets.
