Digital photograph of an illustrated Roll of Honour in memory of eight radio operators of the New Zealand Post Office and one radio operator of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony who were executed by the Japanese Army on Betio Islet, Tarawa Atoll, and on Ocean Island during 1942. Coastwatch radio operators listed are Henry Rexton Cropper Hearn, Arthur Clarence Heehan, John Joseph McCarthy, Arthur Ernest McKenna, Reginald George Morgan, Thomas Colin Murray, Thomas Colin Murray, Clifford Arnold Pearsall, Allan Leicester Taylor, Ronald Third.

Credit note on the Roll of Honour shows it was designed and drawn by Len W. Black in Wellington 1946.

On 15th October 1942 22 New Zealand coastwatchers and civilians were executed by the Japanese Army on Betio Islet, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands. Eight were New Zealand Post Office radio operators. Another radio operator Ron Third was on Banaba or Ocean Island when it was occupied by the Japanese Army and died in captivity in 1942. The Roll of Honour was exhibited in each of the New Zealand Coast Radio Stations until their closure in 1993.
