Description

Two frames of this cartoon depict The Beehive building and Minister for Social Development Paula Bennett on the telephone to Prime Minister John Key about her plans to crack down on welfare cheats and make sure "...people know who to blame for all our problems". Beside her is a small group of people wearing yellow stars on their clothes. Refers to the welfare reforms of the Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Act 2013 which are expected to cut thousands of beneficiaries off welfare benefits. The yellow stars refer to identification of Jewish people through the compulsory wearing of yellow stars as part of anti-Jewish decrees established by Nazis in Germany circa 1939. Hitler used the Jews as a scapegoat, blaming them for Germany's economic and social problems (see Otago Daily Times 15 July 2013).
