Cartoon shows Kevin Rudd stating 'It is not in my nature to just stand back while the Australian government is torn apart by a disloyal mongrel dog - I want to be that dog!'
Accompanying note from cartoonist states 'Kevin Rudd wants to save a damaged Australian Labor party. This question is: who did his darndest to damage it over the last three years? It's ironic that he has suddenly become Prime Minister again'.
On 26 June 2013, with Australian polls predicting a landslide defeat for the Gillard Government in the upcoming Federal Election, Gillard announced a leadership spill to be held that evening, invited Kevin Rudd to challenge and proposed that the loser of the ballot resign from politics at the next election. Rudd agreed to this condition, contested the ballot, and was elected leader.
