In a pub there is some talk over a pictured newspaper headline 'Call to stop property sales to foreigners'. A Maori member of the group states 'When we tried that, your lot invaded the Waikato - and the the rest is history!' The cartoonist's comment to this is '...and treaty settlements'.
In May and June there was concern, especially by Pakeha, over the acquisition by foreign interests of land and property in New Zealand. For Maori, this was ironic in that 'foreign' Pakeha had bought or taken Maori land in the ninteenth century, and refusal to sell had led to war, only later to be ameliorated by Treaty of Waitangi settlements.
