- Description
Shows a group of figures from the Wizard of Oz following a rainbow towards a bright hope of legal marriage. In the foreground the Wicked Witch, labelled bigotry, is on the ground, although they comment that 'Something tells me the witch ain't dead'. Dorothy, the cowardly lion, the tin man and the scarecrow are used to evoke the popular saying 'a friend of Dorothy', referring to homosexuality. The wider context refers to the Marriage Equality Bill passing its third reading in Parliament on 18 April 2013. New Zealand has become the 13th country in the world to legalise gay marriage. However, the cartoonist is suggesting that the fight is not yet over and that the Amendment Bill has not been well-received by everyone.
