Description

Former Solid Energy CEO, Don Elder, stands at a podium. A voice asks him, 'And so Mr Elder... Was this the perfect storm that continued to suck ridiculous salaries out of a dying company and then deposit them into its CEO's bank accounts?' Refers to Solid Energy, New Zealand's largest coal mining company and a state owned enterprise, which holds debt of $389 million. In describing the conditions that led to the financial difficulties, former CEO Don Elder, former Chairman John Palmer, along with both the Minister of State Services Tony Ryall and the Minister of Finance Bill English all referred to it as a 'perfect storm.' Elder left his position at the company on 4 February 2013, but was retained for two months, working from home at the same salary he earned as chief executive to help with the company's transition.
