The prime minister, John Key, and the management of Skycity Casino agree that the Convention Centre deal benefits them both. The only downside will be for problem gamblers.
In 2013 the government granted Skycity Casino the tender to provide a new convention centre in Auckland. Part of the deal was an increase in the number of gaming facilities for the Casino, at a time when problem gambling, particularly among the poor, was an issue.
