Description

Finance Minister Bill English stands in a desert and looks distraught by a pool of oil draining from the words, Solid Energy. Prime Minister John Key tells him to cheer up and keep a smile on his face because 'it works for me'. Refers to Solid Energy, New Zealand's largest coal mining company and a state owned enterprise, which revealed that it was in talks with banks and the Government over its future after its debt rose to $389 million and a further 'significant loss' would be in its half-year result. English stated that he would not let the company fall into receivership, but couldn't rule out the possibility of job cuts and mine closures. Key earned the nickname, 'the smiling assassin', for maintaining his usual cheerfulness in the midst of large layoffs in his former workplace, Merrill Lynch. The desert references the drought that much of New Zealand has been suffering. (New Zealand Herald, 22 Feb 2013)
