- Description
A figure labelled 'The West' is admiring a damaged tree that is sprouting new leaves on one of its branches. Above is the title 'the Arab Spring'. In the next panel the branch has broken and fallen on the figure, causing the figure severe damage. Context: The outbreak of uprisings against dictatorships in several Arab states during 2011 and 2012 known as the 'Arab Spring' were supported in the West as signs of the rise of democracy in the region. The failure of some of the states to subsequently elect Western-style secular democracies was felt by some to show that Western support of the uprisings had backfired against the Western states.
