Description

ACT Party leader John Banks in a media scrum is asked how he can believe he didn't break both the spirit and the letter of election finance legislation. Banks replies that if you can believe the world was created six thousand years ago in six days, it is easy to understand how he can believe that. Context: John Banks was embroiled in controversy over donations he received from SkyCity and German millionaire Kim Dotcom during his campaign for the Auckland mayoralty in 2010. He declared the donations were anonymous and claimed he did not know who the donors were. He also stated that the manner of the donations did not break the provisions of the election campaign finance legislation. At the same time Banks - a committed Christian - was reported as saying he believed the Bible's account that the world was created six thousand years ago in six days.
