Description

Shows a scene depicting three Maori men at water's edge (or possibly two men and a woman). One of the men is standing and gestures toward the prow of a waka. He wears a traditional cloak, carries a taiaha and a patu tucked into his clothing. The other man sits on the ground, and also wears a cloak. The woman (or the third man) stands, wearing a cloak adorned with a bone clasp and long, drop earrings, and holds a kete

Trimmed inside plate marks

The figure of the man with the taiaha is based on Sydney Parkinson's 'A journal of a voyage to the South Seas'. London, 1784, plate 16, opposite page 90 (PUBL-0037-16). The figure that appears to be female is taken from Piron's 'Jeune sauvage de la Nouvelle Zeelande', in the 'Atlas du voyage a la recherche de la Perouse'. No. 25. [Paris, 1800] (PUBL-0057-25). The original drawing was purportedly of a young man, although the figure has also been rendered elsewhere as female (PUBL-0172-2-136), in 'The world in miniature' (Paris, 1824)
