Contains original letters and diary of Henry Kitson from WW1. The letters and diary both include accounts of the sea voyage from New Zealand and mililitary duties and conditions, the Gallipoli landing of April 1915 and subsequent fighting and his experiences of his recuperation in military hospitals. Also includes annotated original photographic prints, and postcards relating to WW1, and a spiral bound book of the letters and diary transcribed and edited by Helen, daughter in law of Henry in 1992. This spiral bound book is probably the same as MS-Papers-4540.
Henry Kitson left New Zealand in February 1915 aboard the Tahiti, he saw action in the Gallipolli Campaign with the 1st Canterbury Regiment before being injured in June 1915 and transported, first to Floriana Hospital in Malta, then to various military hospitals in England including Woodcote Camp in Epsom, Hyde Park Hospital in Plymouth and Walton on Thames. He was discharged from hospital in February 1917 and joined the 37th Reinforcement in 1918, he served as a Warrant Officer at the battles of Bapaume, Biefrillers, Cambrai and Le Quesnoy.

Description: Contains letters from Kitson, to his sisters Belle and Lucy, interspersed with entries from his diary all written while he was on active service during the period 1914 to 1917. Letters and diary describe his voyage to the middle east and then on to Gallipoli and his hospitalization first in Malta and then in England. There are photographs throughout the volume, some taken by Kitson, depicting various scenes from this period. These letters and diary entries have been transcribed and put together in a spiral binding with the photographs and a list of the friends and relatives mentioned in the diary and letters by Helen of Christchurch.
