Description

Diaries kept by A Clive Johns, 9th Hawkes Bay Company, 1st Battalion, Wellington Infantry Brigade while on active service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War One. The diaries commence on 1 Jan 1917 while Johns was undergoing training at Sling Camp. On 12 February he landed in France where he saw action until 17 October when he was wounded by a shell. He was hospitalised in England at Brockenhurst. He left England for New Zealand aboard the hospital ship `Marama' on 7 April 1918.
