Letters of William H Johns to his family while serving in World War One

Description: Letters written by Johns to his parents and brother, Clive, while on active service.The letters begin when he was in Zeitoun Camp, Egypt. On 5 Jul 1915 he was writing from the front lines where he was wounded. The next letter was written from No 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital, 12 Sep 1915. The letters recomence on 15 Jul 1916 from Featherston Military Camp. In Dec 1916 he sailed from New Zealand and joinded the New Mounted Rifle Brigade in Palestine. Description: Diaries kept by A Clive Johns, 9th Hawkes Bay Company, 1st Battalion, Wellington Infantry Brigade while on active service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War One. The diaries commence on 1 Jan 1917 while Johns was undergoing training at Sling Camp. On 12 February he landed in France where he saw action until 17 October when he was wounded by a shell. He was hospitalised in England at Brockenhurst. He left England for New Zealand aboard the hospital ship `Marama' on 7 April 1918. Letters from Clive Johns to his family while on active servive

Description: The letters, written to members of his family, begin when Johns was on HMNZT no 67 (Tofua) as part of the 18th Reinforcements of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. After landing at Plymouth on 28 Dec 1916 Johns was sent to Sling Military Camp. In Feb 1917 he embarked for France where he took part in action on the Western Front. In June 1917 he was wounded. After treatment at No 5 Convalesant Depot in France he subsequently returned to active service. On 17 October 1917 he was injured by a shell and treated at Number Four General Hospital in France. From here he was moved to Southwark Military Hospital, London and in January 1918 he was sent to No 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst. John's last communication was a telegram sent to his family in Te Awamutu, 4 March 1918, which read `Returning shortly'. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Physical Description: Mss

Mildred left with a group of 79 nurses from Wellington, 11 July 1915 bound for Egypt where she served in a hospital in Cairo. In early June 1916 she left Egypt for England where she was stationed at Brockenhurst Hospital.
