A young reporter, standing under a street sign labelled 'Manners St', asks two United States Marine veterans, who had come to New Zealand as part of an official visit to commemorate the stationing of Marines in New Zealand during World War II, of their war memories. A veteran replies that there was 'hard fought hand-to-hand bloody combat!', but 'Soon after that, we left to fight the Japs!'
The reporter is clearly puzzled by the veterans' reference. As the street sign indicates, they are referring to the 'Battle of Manners Street' in April 1943, when there was extensive rioting in Wellington between United States and New Zealand servicemen, an event which was covered up by the New Zealand and United States governments.
