Description

A large military tank bearing the Olympic rings and the words 'Politics and sport' runs after two men, one an Englishman with a Union Jack bowler hat holding a flag reading 'Poms SA [South Africa] rugby tour'; the other a Soviet soldier holding a flag bearing a hammer and sickle and the country name Afghanistan

Context: The cartoon represents two political controversies that plagued the sporting world in 1980: the British Lions rugby union team toured South Africa, in the face of opposition from the British Government and groups opposed to the Commonwealth's sporting contact with South Africa's apartheid regime; and following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979, the United States led a 61-nation boycott of the Moscow Summer Olympics
