- Description
The Minister of Finance, Bill English, holds a shotgun and a rope attached to a large Golden Goose, 'Asset sales', and hopes that its sale will pay off the interest on New Zealand's debt. The Goose thinks that is a short-term solution, since it lays golden eggs.
The justification advanced by the government for partial privatisation was that the cash realised from the sales of shares could pay off the government debt interest charges on overseas debt. That the state assets were producing income which would not go overseas was overlooked.
